So, last night my co-workers threw me a going away party which was quite a good time. It’s far too rare that one consciously realizes the impact they have on other people, and the outpouring of love I received yesterday made it very clear that I have had a positive impact on them. I hope I was able to make it clear just how much I will miss them.

One particularly good friend of mine compared the impact I’ve had on him to that of his father. He went so far as to say that I had taught him more about doing good and being thoughtful in his life than any other person he’s known. I really don’t know what to say to that. Being honored like that, realizing that I’ve had that kind of impact on someone, is simultaneously gratifying and humbling. I’m glad though to know my efforts to “do good” have in some small way been the example I’ve hoped they would.

So, this weekend we achieved something that has been a goal of ours for over a year, we are down to one car. For a lot of people this may seem like a strange goal, but for us it makes a lot of sense. We are doing more and more with our lives to distance ourselves from the consumerism that defines our society, and this is a big way to do that. Not only is it useful in and of itself, but it symbolizes a number of lifestyle choices we’ve made to enable it. Like, both of us working near enough to where we live that biking to work is feasible. Anyway, we’re proud of it. I doubt we’ll ever get to the point that we will not own a car at all, but I can’t imagine ever wanting to have more than one now.

Oh, and this guy has some serious left-handed wingnut in him, but good ideas none the less.

So, today my resignation from InsightsNow became officially official with the submission of my officially official resignation letter. I’ll be going to work on the 7th for an outfit called Concentric Sky doing sysadmin and some open-source business development and evangelism stuff. I’m really excited, but leaving InsightsNow is the toughest thing I’ve done in a long time. I hope I manage to keep in touch with the friends I’ve made there.

Concentric Sky will be good for me I think. I’ll be able to focus on Linux like I’ve never been able to before, and I will be working in the same town I live in for the first time since moving to Eugene. In fact, I plan to bike to work more often than not. That will be extremely nice. All in all, I believe working with Concentric Sky will do more to help me live the life I want to live and do the work I want to do far more than InsightsNow could have, and ultimately that’s why I decided to leave.
