i don't say this as an attempt to refute your point, but the iphone has done that wifi thing since the beginning. but, as another person who has more money than time (at least i like to think i do), i totally agree with your point. there have been a number of occasions where i have completely forgotten about an app that i was interested in because i couldn't download it right at the moment i found it. Worse than that, however, are podcasts. i listen to a few podcasts on a regular basis, and, on the iphone at least, these are also subject to the 20MB data cap, meaning that there are times when i'm on my way home from work and i want to listen to the latest episode of The Watchtower or The Nerdist and have to make some side trip to a place with wifi just to make this happen. Suck.

Thanks! We've got quite a long way to go yet, but it does feel like we're making progress.
Fatherhood is fun! It's also tiring, and time consuming, and all those other "but...." things people like to add. Most of all though, it's fun. I can't believe how much Wil has changed in just 10 weeks. She's like a new-and-improved version of herself every day.

Quite likely true. This gets deeper into the resiliency question that I decided not to address. One of the most arrogant American ideas is that we have a responsibility to "feed the world". That is total BS! The only reason the vast majority of people third world countries are starving is because of Western influence which swept in and destroyed their local food economies with export-only mono-cultures. In the best case, they did this with truly good intentions for mutually beneficial business relationships, in the worst case leveraging the greed of already oppressive ruling parties to actually seize land and take advantage of slave labor. The common case of course lies somewhere in between, which is where we see people "happy" to be working for fractions of pennies per hour so they can afford to eat.

I have a lot to say about this topic, all on your train of thought. But one thing really stands out this morning, if we stopped importing all the food that he produces the poor starving Ecuadorian farmer would no longer be poor or starving... he would be selling or bartering his food in a local market and receiving locally appropriate compensation. Also, he probably wouldn't be producing only one large cash crop, he would be sustaining the health of his land and his family with a variety of local crops.

I followed through. Yesterday I wiped that laptop and installed Natty Narwhal (11.04). Turned off notification of new releases, too. This morning I made a list of ~180 additional packages I ought to have. I'll install those today.

Gnome 3 is a lot like Unity, but only in fairly superficial ways. It doesn't have the integrated menu a'la OSX (but I hear that's coming.... ugh...) so it is more conducive to the many windows approach, which I also use. Anyway, it's not perfect, but it's a lot better. If it were more stable on my machine (can't figure out what the problem is....) I would probably stick with it.
